Food Writing at OSU

Food Writing, WR383, is a four-credit, ten-week course offered by The School of Writing, Literature, and Film at Oregon State University. From the well-crafted recipe to the voice-driven food blog to the magazine-style feature article, students learn how to bring what’s on their plates to life on the page. We read an array of food writing in print—MFK Fisher, Michael Pollan, Yiyun Lee, Anthony Bourdain, Jhumpa Lahiri—and explore how the genre has evolved online. Students are encouraged to look for compelling stories locally and internationally, using food as a lens to explore the intangible: longing, hunger, satisfaction, and love.
